Summary

The four masted iron barque 'Loch Torridon', 2081 tons, at Port Adelaide. She is one of the finest and fastest vessels of her type [iron 4 mast ship, later barque, 2081 tons. ON85876. 287.4 x 42.6 x 24.0. Built 1881 (11) Barclay, Curle and Co., Glasgow. Owners: Aitken and Lilburn. (The Loch Line) registered Glasgow. Sold to Russian owners in 1912 and foundered near the entrance to the English Channel January 1915. Well known in the Australian trades but also visited India frequently. General notes

From the section 'Iron Ships and Barques'. In the iron ships and barques of the late 1860s and 1870s, the sailing ship reached its zenith. The use of iron enabled larger vessels to be constructed and provided greater strength. Poops were often extended for additional passenger accommodation. During the 1870s and 1880s many beautiful four masted iron ships and four masted barques were launched.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
