Summary

The early iron vessel 'Scythia', 886 tons, in an unidentified port. The ship was built in 1868 and retained many of the features of wooden ships. Channels and chainplates may be seen and wooden stanchions and rails surround the poop deck and fo'c'sle head[iron ship, 937 tons, ON58945, 196.9 x 32.7 x 20.5. Built 1868 (11) Bowdler, Chaffer and Co., Seacombe. Owners: William Nicol, registered Liverpool].

General notes

From the section 'Early Iron Vessels'. Many of the early iron ships retained channels and chain plates, and other features of wooden vessels. They were heavily constructed and many were extremely long-lasting.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Scythia, official number 58945, port of registry Liverpool, no. 244 December 1868, registered tonnage Gross 936, Net 886, owner William Nicol, Liverpool. On 18 June 1879 the Scythia sailed from Cardiff for the South Pacific, having engaged her crew at Cardiff on the previous two days. The crew of 21 comprised a Master, Mate, 2nd Mate, carpenter, steward, boatswain/sails, 9 able seamen and 5 apprentices, but at the time appointed for sailing two men failed to join, perhaps suffering a premonition or a hangover which may have saved their lives. A year later the Scythia's Crew Agreement was closed with these words: "Vessel never heard of since 18 June 1879". The entire crew was "Supposed drowned".
