Historical information

Born Cowes, Hampshire 10.9.1821, joining the British army 1839, Jervois fought as Second Captain in South Africa. Married to Lucy 1850 they had 5 children. Secretary of Royal Commission 1858 regarding land fortifications against naval attacks, Governor of Straits Settlements 1875-1877; then of South Australia to 1883 where he established the Permanent Defence Force, obtained a powerful warship PROTECTOR and erected Adelaide's Fort Largs. Jervois utilized the Northern Territory, visited by SA Parliament delegation 1882. He advocated South Australia's responsible progress, introduced new industries, increased agriculture, primary schools and railway lines then became Governor of NZ until 1888. He died in Hampshire 17.8.1897.
