Summary

Personal diaries of Mr F.L. Penhall including his travels interstate and overseas, together with his World War II diary, 1940-1943. (Series 2). The latter includes a typed index, hand written diary entries with photographs, pencil drawings / cartoons by Tom Perry, newspaper cuttings, place cards, tickets, etc pasted in. A photocopy of the February 1991 issue of 'FlyPast' with explanatory note attached is also included.

Historical information

Frank Penhall was born in Adelaide on 9 January 1917. He attended Norwood High School to the end of 1932. On 10 April 1933 he joined the staff of Royal Insurance Co Ltd as a junior clerk. From January 1941 until April 1946 he was a member of Aircrew in R.A.A.F. with the rank of Flight Lieutenant on discharge. When he joined the RAAF in Adelaide he went overseas on the troopship 'Monterey' just before Pearl Harbour. He rejoined the 'Royal' and was appointed Assistant Manager in Adelaide in 1948 and later Manager for S.A. in 1955 until a transfer to Melbourne in 1975 as Assistant General Manager for Australia. He retired in 1978. His first wife died in 1975 and he married again in 1983.
