Summary

Comprises fair copy journal by Richard Fancis Burton of a voyage from London to the Indian Ocean and back as ship's surgeon aboard the whaling barque 'Reliance'. Includes descriptions of islands, finely drawn charts and lists of crew, discoveries of shoals and reefs and "ships spoke with" at end of volume. Illustrated with whale tail silhouettes showing size of catches, barrels and occasional vignettes of ships.
