Summary

Small octavo size diary with 80 pages written in ink and pencil, in a notebook 'The New Commercial Memorandum Book', which includes printed commercial information on the first eight pages. Nine pages at the end of the notebook contain details of minor personal transactions and other miscellaneous notes. The diary is written on blank pages and begins on Wednesday 6 June 1838, and records the details of the ship voyage of Thomas Plummer Addison and his wife, early South Australian pioneers, from Plymouth, England, to Adelaide, South Australia, on board the ship 'Pestonjee Bomanjee'. Addison records his contact with Governor of South Australia, Lieutenant-Colonel George Gawler, who was also aboard the ship, along with events and daily life aboard the ship during the voyage including: the birth of his daughter; weddings and funerals on board; conditions aboard the ship including problems with food and rats; the ten day break in the voyage at Rio de Janeiro; crossing the equator ceremony involving a messenger from Neptune; and the arrival at Holdfast Bay on the morning of 12 October 1838. Historical information

Thomas Plummer Addison, son of Thomas Addison and Sarah Plummer, was born in England in 1804. He married Eliza Mary Claxton Tourner on 20 February 1830 at St Bride, Fleet Street in London. He emigrated to South Australia in 1838, leaving Plymouth on 6 June 1838 and arriving in South Australia on 12 October 1838, on board the 'Pestonjee Bomanjee'. During the voyage his wife gave birth to a daughter, Sarah Marina. Addison was an Engineer and worked in the Government Service for thirty years, and held the position of Deputy Collector of Customs at Port Adelaide for many years. He died of apoplexy on 14 January 1878, aged 74 years. His wife Eliza died the follwing year in 1879. Children: Sarah Elizabeth (1831-1832), Sarah Marina (1838-), Ada Jane (1838-1923), Arthur Richman (1840-1915), Ada Jane (1844-1923), and Harold Mayo (1847-1941).
