Historical information

Caption on back of photograph reads: 'My Wife's & My Great uncle Benjamin Wakeford, cup bearer to King William 1V and Queen Adelaide. His son William was Queen's [?] under Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; and his son Albert Edward Wakeford is now private secretary to King George V and married my cousin Annie Lamb'. It appears that Albert Edward Wakeford was actually senior page to the Prince of Wales and/or Page of the Backstairs to Queen Mary. The South Australian connection to the Wakeford family is unclear although it is believed that a John Wakeford and an Elizabeth Jane Wakeford came out to South Australia in 1855.
