Historical information

James Greenlees Senior emigrated to South Australia in 1865 from a farm near Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland on the ship 'Peeress' along with his second wife Jane and family; James Junior aged 25, David 20 and Jean 15. They first settled in Aldinga to farm but found the land to be unproductive. James Junior became a school teacher and taught at Hindmarsh, Penola, Port MacDonnell and later at Aldgate. His son Alan David Greenlees finished his schooling at Prince Alfred College before studying at Adelaide University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1907 and Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1913. During his working life, Alan Greenlees was General Manager of Amalgamated Zinc Ltd. He moved to Port Pirie in 1925 where he managed the building of zinc roasting plants. He returned to live in Adelaide in 1929. He had one child Rollo Greenlees born in Broken Hill 1912. Winifred Smith Greenlees (nee Thomson) was born in 1884, the daughter of Alexander Thomson and Amelia Haynes. She grew up in Adelaide and studied violin at the Adelaide Conservatorium of Music before she married.
