Historical information

'Sergeant Harold Ernest Clark served with the 27th Battalion, seeing action briefly at Gallipoli and in France. A banker by profession, he served for five years in the Port Pirie Volunteer Militia in South Australia. He enlisted in the A.I.F. at Keswick, South Australia, on 29 March 1915, two months after his 31st birthday, listing his mother Ellen Clark of Glenhuntly, Victoria, as next of kin. On 15 April 1915 he was transferred to the 27th Battalion and promoted to temporary Sergeant, an appointment confirmed at the end of August. Lance Corporal Andrew Douglas Clark was Harold's cousin, eight years his junior. A chemist by profession, he enlisted in August 1915 and was appointed to the 43rd Battalion. His next of kin was given as his mother, Elizabeth Clark, who lived at Port Pirie, where Harold also lived prior to enlistment.' [From auction catalogue.].
