Historical information

Nineteen year old Thomas Chappell, eldest child of John and Alma Chappell, enlisted in Adelaide on 10 December 1917. He left Australia from Sydney aboard H.T. 'Port Darwin' and disembarked at the Suez on 7 June 1918. He was assigned as a driver for the Australian Mounted Division Train, attached to the 35th Army Service Corps Company (ASC), but appears to have been unwell for much of the time, and returned to Australia aboard the 'Burma', arriving on 27 August 1919. He subsequently married Louisa Catt in 1925.
