Dugan, Winston, Sir, 7 January 1936, Manuscript, D 8718/1(L)
Amusing and positive impressions of life in South Australia written by the Governor of South Australia and Victoria, Sir Winston Dugan (1877-1951). 'Wool and wheat are getting good prices - optimism prevails and our Centenary Year is upon us ... Great people these, with big hearts and wonderful grit in face of difficulties. A bad year makes them hope all the harder for a good one. And they have just come through some pretty bad ones .... Up in the north a hundred and twenty in the shade plays hell with things ... but now the rains have come and everything is couleur de rose, stock is fattening well and the eagle hawk, the blow fly and the dingo are forgotten.' Five pages on three sheets, Government House Adelaide letterhead, dated 7th Jan. 1936, fully signed (Winston Dugan), with the stamped envelope addressed to Captain R. Wrottesley, Downton, Wiltshire. 8 x 10", with two original folds. [From vendor's catalogue.]
