Summary

Measuring wheel used by SA Archives photographers for calculating distances of building facades from any given location on street frontages in the city of Adelaide during photography of buildings for the Library's City Acre Collection. It comprises a rubber-tyred wheel attached to a metal frame with a device measuring distance in feet. For a digital image do a NUMBER search on D 8425(Misc).

Historical information

A device of this sort recorded Adelaide street measurements in yards in photographs taken in 1960s-1985. Some photograph captions as early as 1941 mention street measurements however (e.g. see Summary for image B 10554, Acre 1). In many cases buildings were photographed by Library staff following notification of building or demolition approval from the Adelaide City Council.
