Historical information

Roy Lister Robinson was born at Macclesfield, South Australia in 1883, eldest son of William Robinson (blacksmith) and his wife Annie Blanche, nee Lowe. He won a scholarship to St Peter's College in 1896 and was educated later at the School of Mines and Industries, studying engineering. Following studies at the University of Adelaide he won the second Rhodes Scholarship awarded to a South Australian and went up to Magdalen College, Oxford. He embarked on a career in forestry and became chief planner for the extensive government plantation programme in Great Britain. He was knighted in 1931 and raised to the peerage in 1947. He held honorary positions associated with international forestry. Lord Robinson died in Ottawa, Canada in 1952 while on a forestry delegation from the United Kingdom. An only son died on active service in 1942.
