Summary

Brass collapsing telescope, or spyglass, used by W A Crowder while a member of the Overland Telegraph Line Construction party 1871-1872. This was also noted in his diary. It has a leather grip and two remaining endpiece leather caps to protect the lens and glass. The eye piece has a small brass sliding lens cover. Length elongated 40 cm. Length collapsed 14.2 cm. Photographic copy only available for reference.

Historical information

William Alfred Crowder was born in South Australia on 3 January 1854, the son of Nathaniel and Emily (nee Hayward) Crowder. He married Isabella Brown McCallum on 25 July 1878 with whom he had four children - William, Margaret, George and Mima. He died on 26 August 1891 aged 37 years.
