Summary

Diary of James Gilbert McDougall who recorded his observations of the flora and fauna around Yorke Peninsula when he was living in Edithburgh (articled to Mr E Gower); the entries date from 2 January 1886 to 16 October 1887. Includes two small painted sketches on card of insects, and a pencil sketch of seeds, which were originally placed loose in volume. At rear of volume are two indexes, for 1886 and 1887 observations.

Historical information

Flyleaf has written in pencil: 'J C McDougall c/o National Bank Adelaide'. (Insect 'Scintilla McDougalli' referred to on page 150.) James Gilbert McDougall LL.B. who was born at Wigan, Lancashire, England about 1867, arrived in South Australia around 1883, and died 21 July 1892, a few months after he married ('Register' newspaper obituary 26 July 1892).
