Part of a collection of photographs taken by Eric Arthur, a Mount Gambier photographer.

Historical information

Maurice Harry Tapfield, born 6/3/1913 in Mount Gambier, son of Walter Frederick Tapfield (grazier at 'Taratap' near Kingston) and Telesine Maud Barnett. Maurice enlisted for 'Special Forces' for service abroad and signed up in Mount Gambier on 13/5/1940. WO II M.H. Tapfield (SX2794) was assigned to the 2nd/9th Australian Division Cavalry Regiment (Tanks). He embarked for service in the Middle East on 10/4/1941, completed his tour of duty in the Middle East on 28/2/1943. Cited in the book 'Tanks of the East' by Colin Kerr. Received a commission in recognition of distinguished service in the M.E. in October, 1941 and was promoted to Lieutenant. Mentioned in dispatches 30/12/1941 and was awarded a Commendation Card for Gallantry in Action 23/1/1943. Maurice was posted to the 2nd 11th Australian Commando Squadron from 1/5/1944 and in 1945 completed his service with the A.I.F. fighting in British North Borneo. Maurice Tapfield died at 'Taratap' on 29/7/1956 aged 43 years. [Information supplied by Judy Daly].
