Summary

Album titled 'Australia; Production Facilities, General Motors-Holden's Ltd.', compiled by the Public Relations Division, 1944. Comprising information, statistics and photographs of production projects undertaken by GM-H during WWII. Contains photographs and layout plans of plant facilities including Woodville, the 'largest body building plant in the Southern Hemisphere', Pagewood, Brisbane, and Fishermen's Bend. Also contains photographs of equipment produced including trucks, Jeeps and other purpose built vehicles, amphibious craft, dressing stations and blood banks, wireless signal units, water tank vehicles, aircraft trailers, compressor units, tropic proofing, pontoons and folding boats, lifeboats and dories, work boats, diesel engines, truck wheels, aircraft components (including Beaufort, Beaufighter, Mosquito, Boomerang), anti-tank guns, howitzers, and bombs and shells.

Historical information

With the outbreak of war in 1939 manufacturing production in Australia was swung towards wartime production. On June 16th 1939 the Australian Parliament mobilized all the country's resources and manpower, materials and productive capacity. GMH placed all plants, personnel and facilities at the disposal of the Australian Government. GMH produced aeroplanes, trucks, ambulances, military vehicles, ammunition, weaponry, tents, assorted canvas goods, boats and associated materials. The scheme comprised a factory news service with six pictorial newsboards located throughout the factory with photographs associating equipment made with the fighting services, a new poster each fortnight, special messages at vantage points, slogan stickers, achievement progress indicators (graphs), exhibitions and special pay envelopes featuring slogans.
