Summary

Album titled 'Exhortation, GMH, Woodville 1941', comprising material from and documenting a scheme which was intended to encourage GMH employees to work hard making aeroplanes and other equipment for the World War II effort. Includes posters, newspaper articles, photographs, correspondence, slogan stickers, articles, photographs of graphs, workers at displays, and news service boards, and a pay envelope.

Historical information

The scheme comprised a factory news service with six pictorial newsboards located throughout the factory with photographs associating equipment made with the fighting services, a new poster each fortnight, special messages at vantage points, slogan stickers, achievement progress indicators (graphs), exhibitions and special pay envelopes featuring slogans.

With the outbreak of war in 1939 manufacturing production in Australia was swung towards wartime production. On June 16th 1939 the Australian Parliament mobilized all the country's resources and manpower, materials and productive capacity. GMH placed all plants, personnel and facilities at the disposal of the Australian Government. GMH produced aeroplanes, trucks, ambulances, military vehicles, ammunition, weaponry, tents, assorted canvas goods, boats and associated materials.
