Summary

Black and white mounted photographs, with annotations, of General Motors-Holden's Limited manufacturing Plant at Woodville during, and immediately after, World War Two. Comprises images of plans showing the proposed layout of Plants 2 and 5, Port Road entrance gate, G-6 barrel boring, aircraft tank assembly, Dory boat and Beaufighter manufacture, Kirkshire Foundry, Precision room, drill line, small dies section,experimental engineering section, and other areas at Woodville. Includes images of apprentices in the class room and the training workshop, and of measures taken to supply substitute fuels during power restrictions.

Historical information

With the outbreak of war in 1939 manufacturing production in Australia was swung towards wartime production. On June 16th 1939 the Australian Parliament mobilized all the country's resources and manpower, materials and productive capacity. GMH placed all plants, personnel and facilities at the disposal of the Australian Government. GMH produced aeroplanes, trucks, ambulances, military vehicles, ammunition, weaponry, tents, assorted canvas goods, boats and associated materials.
