Summary

View from above of the John Martin's dining hall during the 75th birthday celebrations. A party was given for the children of fathers in the A.I.F. and this photo shows long rows of dining tables in front of the stage filled with children and their families. A band and a singer or compere are on stage. The party was given on 25th October 1941.

Historical information

Colin Ballantyne was born 12 July 1908 Wayville, South Australia, and died 2 July 1988. A theatre director, actor, playwright, leader, administrator and commercial photographer, he directed around 100 productions covering a wide range of classical and contemporary works between 1931-1971. He also directed the major local drama component of the first five Adelaide Festivals; and founded or helped build companies like the WEA Little Theatre, the Adelaide Theatre Group at the Sheridan Theatre and the Company of Players. Ballantyne was a state and federal president of the Arts Council and the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the State Theatre Company of South Australia from 1972-1978; when he became the Chairman of the Performing Arts Collections of South Australia he guided its development on a daily basis.
