Historical information

Colin Ballantyne was born 12 July 1908 Wayville, South Australia, and died 2 July 1988. A theatre director, actor, playwright, leader, administrator and commercial photographer, he directed around 100 productions covering a wide range of classical and contemporary works between 1931-1971. He also directed the major local drama component of the first five Adelaide Festivals; and founded or helped build companies like the WEA Little Theatre, the Adelaide Theatre Group at the Sheridan Theatre and the Company of Players. Ballantyne was a state and federal president of the Arts Council and the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the State Theatre Company of South Australia from 1972-1978; when he became the Chairman of the Performing Arts Collections of South Australia he guided its development on a daily basis.
