Summary

Kapunda Mine. The township was established after copper was found in 1842 by Francis Dutton and Charles Bagot. Mining began in 1844 and continued until 1879. The railway line from Adelaide was opened in 1860. Kapunda was a keystone in the early development of South Australia and was the oldest copper mining town in Australia. This photograph shows the chimneys and workings of the mine.
