Summary

Members of the Royal Australian Air Force on a wharf in 1937. A ship can be seen in the background. The occasion was possibly the arrival in Australia of the NA-16-2K, a North American Aviation license-built plane called the Wirraway. It arrived in Australia in August 1937 and was assembled at Laverton. The design was selected following a global tour of aircraft manufacturers in 1936 by three RAAF officers led by Wing Commander Lawrence Wackett. Two planes were purchased. One had the fixed undercarriage (NA-16-1A) and the other had a retractable undercarriage (NA-16-2K) The planes were provided to the RAAF to enable comparative flight tests. The RAAF preferred the NA-16-2K.
