Summary

Woman operating a Wireless pedal transceiver. Two way telephony is possible within a radius of 150 miles. Under favourable weather conditions perfect telephony has taken place up to 600 miles. Besides acting as a communication with the flying doctor these sets enable settlers to send and receive commercial telegrams. From Christian World. Feb. 19, 1937. Newspaper clipping on back of photograph states :"The source of power for the transmitters is a small high tension generator driven by bicycle pedals which avoid the maintenance of a complicated motor and the difficulties involved at outback homesteads of ensuring an unfailing fuel supply. All that is necessary is man-power. For distances up to 200 miles communication from an outpost to its base station or between two out-stations may be carried on by wireless telephony. For greater distances it is preferable to use Morse code. The ingenuity of Traeger overcame the difficulty of outback settlers lacking a knowledge of Morse, because by means of the invention the settler has merely to tap his call for help on an ordinary keyboard resembling that of a typewriter with each key marked with a letter or numeral. As the message taps out the keys automatically send out the correct Morse signals, correctly made and spaced to the base station possibly hundreds of miles away. The message is picked up at the base and a reply is made and picked up on the transceiver by direct wireless telephony, as from an ordinary broadcasting station. In this way the flying doctor at the base is informed of the call for assistance from the outback, and is able to ask his questions concerning the history of the case over the air. Replies are tapped back by the automatic Morse system: then the doctor sends back his advice. This in many cases is sufficient: in others it serves as a temporary precaution until the doctor can arrive at the station in the aeroplane which is always at his disposal".
