Historical information

From information provided by a researcher: Ernest Pitcher travelled to Australia from London on S.S. 'Liguria' in 1882, as a 13 year old apprentice. He also travelled on the 'Liguria' as a general servant from Sydney to Tilbury 26 April 1889 to 14 August 1889 and from Tilbury to Sydney 27 August 1889 to 1 November 1889. In South Coogee in Sydney's estern suburbs there is a Liguria Street. Another researcher has provided information: Liguria Grant (named after the ship) was born on this ship whilst returning to England from Australia. He was born in the Bay of Biscay in 1890 according to the birth certificate. His father was John Grant and mother was Isabelle, and had a brother John. They had originally left Aberdeen for Australia in the 1880's. From another researcher: 'Most sailings seemed to be connected to the immigration of Europeans from Canada to Australia'.
