Summary

Glen Osmond Chimney. Previously ore was shipped to Wales for smeltering but following experimental operations a smelter was constructed at Glen Osmond Mine and connected to the adjacent hillside by a long underground flue. However only small amounts were produced and the smelter was closed in 1851. During its production time it had successfully separated silver from the baser metals and produced lead for domestic and export purposes. The Glen Osmond smelter chimney was added to the Register of State Heritage Items in 1984. The circular chimney is set on a square base with a slight taper towards the brick-banded top. Being built in the 1840's it is the oldest remaining chimney in South Australia.
