Summary

South Australian Field Artillery. In 1900 the day before Federation the South Australian Colonial Forces were redesigned and reorganised with the "A" Battery becoming the Number 1 South Australian Battery, Australian Field Artillery. The mounted soldiers and and four limber and gun carriages can be seen parading in the parklands.

Historical information

The officer in command, mounted at the front, is Major AEM Norton DSO 1869-1922. Before the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902, Norton commanded 'A' Battery of the Field Artillery as a captain. In May 1900 he volunteered for the 4th South Australian Imperial Bushmen and went to South Africa as a captain commanding 'B' Squadron, one of two squadrons of mounted infantry making up this unit. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for an action on 3 July 1900 in which a small party of South Australians under his command recaptured three artillery pieces the Boers had seized perhaps 20 minutes earlier. Three weeks later he was injured in another action and repatriated home. In April 1902 Lord Tennyson, the Governor, pinned the DSO on him at a ceremony in the centre of the Torrens Parade Ground. He is clearly wearing this decoration in the photograph along with his Queen's South Africa medal (QSA). Norton was promoted to Major on his return and remained involved in the military until his appointment as South Australian Trade Commissioner in London in 1906. The photograph then was taken between April 1902 and his departure for London in late 1906.
