Summary

[Description on on back of photograph] 'Ferry steps and boats in the Port River, Birkenhead side, at Rann Street. / About 1889 / On the left is the Tug Company's machinery shed. Standing in the boat from left to right are A. Joseph, (who ran a ferry service from Birkenhead to Robinson Bridge), Councillor George Wilkes, Joseph Roderick and Henry Nelson (both employed by A, Joseph). Note the platfrom at each end of the ferry boats for facilitating landing at the steps. The boat on the extreme left is a waterman's skiff. a type in use before the institution of the ferries. The waterman charged sixpence per head and were put out of buisiness by the ferry owners, who charged only a penny. The usual method of propelling the ferries was for the oarsman to stand up and push the oars, this method being less tiring than the ordinary rowing position'.
