Summary

Breakwater, Granite Island was built from 1879. Funding for the project was withheld after the breakwater reached 1,000 feet from the intended 3,000 feet. It is 30 feet wide at the top and 200 feet wide on the seabed. Granite Island granite blocks were used to build it. It protrudes east into Encounter Bay to protect anchorages from sea swells.
