Summary

Cadnia Sliding Rock Valley. The township of Cadnia was officially proclaimed in 1873, but the official name was rarely used as the name 'Sliding Rock' had been given to the district in the 1850s. Copper was discovered at Sliding Rock in the Flinders Ranges in 1869. The town was surveyed in 1872 and was expected to be named Sliding Rock, but instead the surveyor named it Cadnia, after an Aboriginal word for rock. The photograph shows a typical wattle and daub cottage with chimneys smoking. Ten men are standing around the home and a woman is peeping out of the doorway.
