Summary

Wakefield Street, south side, October 3rd 1864. German School is about 16 yards east of Chancery Lane. A near duplicate photograph is at B 37440. German School in Wakefield Street, Adelaide was founded in 1851 by H von Schleinitz who arrived in Adelaide from Bremen in 1849. Early teachers included Hansen, Klette and Nootnagel. H von Schleinitz left in 1852. The photograph shows the headmaster Mr Leschen standing outside the two storey school with his students in 1864. They are wearing uniforms and white sashes. A band is playing on the first floor balcony. A large Bundesadler (Federal or Imperial Eagle) can be seen in front of the doorway to the school. The photograph was taken on October 3, 1864 just before the teachers and pupils, headed by a band, left for a picnic. The Headmaster was Herr Leschen.
