Summary

St. Aloysius Church, Sevenhill showing Gothic Revival architectural style was established by the Jesuits in 1875. Sevenhills (named after the Seven Hills of Rome) was named after Austrian Jesuit priest Aloysius Kranewitter and was the birthplace of the Jesuits in Australia. As well as serving Catholics they planted vines, built the church, opened a college which also served as a seminary for training priests. In 1856 the College was the only Roman Catholic establishment in Australia and pupils came from all the other colonies of Australia to attend school. The photograph shows the Church, monastery and the winery as it was in 1932.
