Summary

Conservatory and residence of Sir Thomas Elder, corner of Cross Road and Glen Osmond Road, Glen Osmond. The property was called Birksgate. Sir Thomas Elder arived from Scotland in 1839 and was involved with wool selling, Adelaide Steamship Company, real estate, mining. He was a benefactor to St Peter's Cathedral, Prince Alfred College, hospitals and the Working Men's Home. The photograph shows the magnificent conservatory in the foreground was is constructed from glass and iron and decorated with wrought iron lacework. A pond and fountain can be seen inside the conservatory. A gentleman is standing in the doorway speaking to a gardener. A pavillion stands between the conservatory and the bluestone house. A view of the eastern suburbs of Adelaide can be seen behind the trees.
