Historical information

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP), also known as 'the Big Australian', was incorporated in Victoria in 1885, operating the silver, lead and zinc mine at Broken Hill in western New South Wales, Australia. Broken Hill is near the border with South Australia, and it is Australia's longest-lived mining city. BHP ceased mining at Broken Hill in 1939. The company later expanded into steel manufacturing, shipping and collieries, petroleum exploration, and various mining projects. In 2001, the company's name was changed to BHP Billiton after merging with Billiton Plc. In 2017, BHP Billiton rebranded itself as BHP Limited. BHP has been one of the biggest mining companies in the world since the end of the nineteenth century. It greatly influences Australia's industrial development.
