Historical information

Anton Schlink was born in Paderborn, Prussia and had experience working with sheep in the south of Germany before transferring to South Australia some time in the forties. He obtained employment with the Eankines in the Strathalbyn district and spent part of his time shepherding sheep at Belvidere and Langhorne's Creek. In 1854 he took a lease of Flinders Island on the West Coast about 17 miles out from Port Elliston. He maintained a flock of 7,000 merinos but isolation was a problem and he found it difficult to get workers to remain there because of the loneliness of the conditions. After becoming thoroughly well established on Flinders Island he extended his operations to Eyre Peninsula and took up the Yalabingie run bewteen Maryvale and Witera Stations. The area was added to and at one time he was carrying 60,000 sheep. Besides being a pastoralist, Anton Schlink had considerable shipping interests. He had four sailing vessels engaged in the Eyre Peninsula trade, and a steamer. He was able to retire from business in 1883 and thereafter lived at Woodville, where he died on December 26, 1895, at the age of 73 years.
