Summary

Leg of Mutton Lake, Mount Gambier is one of four lakes formed from one of Australia's youngest volcanoes which erupted aproximately 4,000 years ago. Leg of Mutton Lake was a vent from which lava flowed. In 1876 a two hectare tree nursery was established and fenced off on the shore of Leg of Mutton Lake. A stone cottage was erected nearby for the first nurseryman Chales Beale.
