Summary

[General description] S. S. Sorata stranded off the rocky coast of Cape Jervis. Crew members can be seen leaning on the rails of the ship. The passengers were offloaded and sent back to Port Adelaide by steam tug. [Caption below photograph] 'Stranding of the Orient Linet S.S. Sorata on the rocks off Cape Jervis, on the night of September 3rd, 1880 / Looking due south / Pumps at work' [On back of photograph] 'Presented by S. Talbot Smith (who had landed at Adelaide on the morning of that day). On board were: The Duke of Manchester, Sir Herbert Sandford, British Commissioner to Melbourne Exhibition and Reverend Samuel Hebditch, afterwards of Adelaide.
