General notes

This photograph may have been taken as part of the Juvenile Fancy Dress Ball held at the Adelaide Town Hall in September 1887. A report on the ball can be found in the 'South Australian Register', Saturday 24 September 1887, page 6.

Historical information

Jean Hodgkiss Prockter was born on 7 April 1882 to Fanny (nee Lowe) and James Samuel Prockter of North Adelaide. She was educated at Yoothamurra, Glenelg, and Miss Martin's School, Towers Court, Victoria Square, where she passed in English, French, Botany and Physiology in 1900. Her name frequently appeared in the Adelaide social pages at balls, garden parties and at homes, at which she participated in performances of songs and scenes from plays. She married Thomas Alexander McPherson of Avoca Station, River Darling, at St Peter's Church, Glenelg, South Australia, 9 December 1915. They had three children, Ian, Mary and Joan. She died at Burregong Station, Urana, New South Wales, on 6 May 1948.
