Historical information

"The church, which is built in the Italian style, in plan consists of chancel, nave, north and south side chapels, and two towers, in addition to which there is also a vestry on the north side of the chancel. The walls are built of Glen Osmond stone, with cement dressings on the exterior, and on the interior are covered with floated rough stucco, with pilasters, archivolts, cornices, &c, in plaster of Paris. The whole of the floor is covered with Mintaro slate, and the roof is open-timbered, stained, and varnished. The chancel arch is semicircular, and supported by Tuscan columns, the arches of the side chapels by pilasters with foliated capitals. ... Over the high altar, which is decorated with the customary ornaments, is a large painting, being a copy of a painting of St. Ignatius of Loyola, at St. Michael's Church, Munich. It is a superior work of art, was executed by Schobet, and presented by Miss Agnes Wuerzl, of Munich. Another painting, on the southern side of the high altar, is a representation of Peter Claver preaching to the negroes, given by the Louis Mission Society of Munich." [Advertiser 8 Aug 1870]. The foundation stone was laid 17 October 1869 by Fr. John Smyth, the architect was William Louis de Normanville and the builder was Michael McMullen.
