Historical information

Bridgetta McKniff (aged 17) and her sister Annie (aged 11) were sent out from Ireland in 1849 because of the potato famine, arriving in South Australia in 1849 (their mother had died and their brother was sent to Canada). Future husband, Thomas Gregory Haddrick had arrived in the colony at the age of seven in 1838 with his family aboard the 'Resource'. Bridgetta and Thomas were married at Christ Church, O'Halloran Hill on 8 April 1852, and went on to have nine children: Lavinia Laura Adelaide (b.17 March 1853), Ethelbert Cedric (b.24 September 1854), Eleanor Annie (b.3 October 1858), Edward Henry (b. 10 February 1861), Cecilia Mary (b. 2 April 1863), Alexander Thomas (b. 6 May 1865), Alfred Page (b.14 July 1868), Frank Ernest (b.1 October 1870), and Violet Etta Blanche (b. 9 August 1874, d. 19 August 1887). Bridget died in 1879, aged 47. Thomas subsequently remarried Margaret Glover nee Richards, with whom he had another three children: Gregory (b.1891 Victoria), Rowland (b.1893 South Australia), and Lily Irene (b. 1898 South Australia). He died in 1908 aged 77. Thomas is interred with his first wife Bridgetta and two of his first marriage children, Ethelbert and Violet Etta, at North Road Cemetery, South Australia.
