Summary

Melbourne Street Lower North Adelaide, from the North Adelaide Congregation Church. In this panoramic view across lower North Adelaide rooftops are seen receding towards the distant foothills. Substantial houses and gardens of the well-off appear in the foreground. On the left is Stanley Street with its recently planted avenue of Plane trees. On the right is Melbourne Street. Historical information

Denis Parslow worked as an Aerial Photographer for the South Australian Department of Lands (now the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources) from the 1970s until 2003, when the Aerial Survey Unit was outsourced. On completion of his government service, he then worked for several different private companies doing freelance aerial photography. Since retiring, Denis has pursued his life-long interests in aviation and photography by purchasing a drone. This machine has the capacity to take moving and still photography at a good resolution. Denis' knowledge of SA areas and terrain and his interest in capturing the changing nature of the State, have lead him to look at the SLSA Pictorial collections on-line. There he found a series of photographs taken by Francis Gabriel in early 20th Century South Australia. These included views from the tower of the then Congregational Church (now Uniting Church), in Brougham Place, North Adelaide. Denis has replicated these views using his drone.
