Summary

A group from the congregation of the Union Church in Tarcoola Street at Renmark West, built 1919-1920 on donated land on the south side of the Renmark West [primary] School. It is believed that it was taken in rlation to the laying of the foundation stones (see reports in the 'Murray River and Australian River Record', 14 November 1919, page 6 and 5 November 1920, page 5).

Believed to have been part of a collection of photos belonging to Freda Victoria (nee Gregory) Sonnemann (1908-1999).

Historical information

From information provided by John Bishop: At present it is not possible to identify the 'Reverend' because the church was most uncommon in SA, initiated by Rev. Aaron Eustace Francis (1880-1959), the Congregational minister in Renmark at the time, and Mr. Ernest Wesley Sanders (d. 1926, aged 50), the lay Methodist preacher at Renmark West, who was ordained as a Congregational minister [not Methodist] by the time that he was invited to open the Union Church on 31.10.1920. "Union" meant that it and its Sunday School were attended by people of both denominations. The 'Reverend' might be Francis or Sanders or another local minister who attended the laying of the foundation stone on 6.11.1919 and the opening. The photo is annotated on the back by Freda Sonnemann (nee Gregory), who apparently sent it to 'Isobel Love nee Jennings' seeking assistance in naming the people in the group. An annotation in another hand is believed to be that of 'Isobel' (despite the spelling of her name - she was born Isabell Mary Jennings in 1916, daughter of Mary Milne (nee Paterson) and John Patrick Jennings, of Renmark, and died in 2006). Additional information on some of the named individuals: 1. J. Smith and Granny Smith have been the most difficult to identify and I don't claim certainty but, by comparing their features with those of Elizabeth Jane (nee Brown, formerly Freeman (1864-1946) and her 2nd husband Edward John Smith ('Jack') (1877-1960) in photos on 2 trees posted on Ancestry.com, I believe that they are the same people. 2. Percival John Capes ('Percy') was an organist at the church. He was born 1902, Yanac, Victoria, and died 25.5.1990. He married Olga Frances Koehler, 1927, reg. Culcairn, NSW, so she's obviously not 'Mrs. P. Capes' in the middle row. That woman is possibly Percival's mother Ruth Mary (nee Cattermole) (1880-1974) or her sister Christina Jane (1884-1966), wives of Walter Henshaw Capes (1860-1936) and his brother Ernest Digby Capes (1874-1964), respectively. 3. Lennox Arthur Darrington, d. 10.10.1977, aged 97. 4. Albert Ernest Roy, b. 1886, Nhill, Victoria, d. 30.11.1968, aged 82, was a nephew of Walter and Ernest Capes. His wife Florence Alexina (nee Hill) and their daughter Florence Jean, b. 22.12.1917, are in the front row. 5. John Patrick Jennings (d. 1973) was Isobel's father. 6. John Morris was known as "Dad", at least whilst he lived at Renmark West from the mid-1910s to 1931. He was b. 30.4.1848, Dry Creek [in fact the area of present-day Modbury which was then named Upper Dry Creek] and d. 21.2.1937, Adelaide. The church hall was named in his honour upon its completion in 1925. 7. Eliza (nee Hammond) Richards was the wife of Samuel Benjamin Richards (1874-1951). She died in 1959, aged 84, reg. Norwood Reg. District. 8. Ada Anderson is probably Agnes Christina Ada Anderson, b. 2.4.1903, Bugle Ranges, daughter of Emily (nee Harrip) and John Frederick Anderson. She married William Joseph Polish at the Union Church on 21.9.1932. She d. 9.1.1980. 9. Gwendoline Mary Gertrude Dalton, b. 1903, daughter of Adelaide Ann (nee Larking) and Arthur Dalton, married Paul Bruno Weber (1902, as Bruno Paul-1992), 30.3.1925, Union Church. She d. 25.2.1970. 10. Helen Margaret Breeze (born 27 January 1902 and married Albert Last on 30 April 1926, and died on 28 October 1958, and he died on 3 August 1957.
