Summary

Half-plate glass negative portrait of an Australian soldier in World War One uniform, including slouch hat, standing with his hands behind his back. Written on original paper envelope: 'Mr[?] Sellick. Football Club. Copy. 3329'. The soldier may be a 'Mr Sellick' or was possibly a member of Sellick Football Club. The soldier pictured is the same as photograph as B 74897 which has 'Stuart [Sturt] Football Club' written on the envelope. The soldier pictured may be Frank Turner Sellick who played for Sturt Football Club from 1914, number 178.

General notes

One of a collection of glass plate negatives of South Australian soldiers, likely produced in metropolitan Adelaide from late 1914 to 1916. The majority of the images are single portraits and demonstrate a wide variety of uniforms, accoutrements and weapons, including swords and rifles with and without fixed bayonets, and various backdrops including outdoors, against buildings, and studio shots with a rural idyll woodland background. Included are portraits of men in twos or groups of three or more, some with wives and sometimes children and parents. Some portraits feature warhorses, senior offices, a quartermaster, and the crew of a West Spring Gun. The original paper envelopes of a number of the glass plates have survived, providing the name of the soldier along with details of the types and quantities of prints ordered. One of the envelopes gives details of the maker, Edwards and Errington of 52 Flinders Street, Adelaide. See B 74889-B 75011, B 75104.

Historical information

No. 6925 Private Frank Turner Sellick, was born in Petersburg, South Australia, and worked as a warehouseman before he enlisted with the AIF on 14 July 1915 aged 23 years. His mother, Elizabeth Bowering Sellick, lived in Unley. He served with the 15th Field Ambulance and embarked from Australia on 10 November 1915, serving in Egypt and France. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1919, then Lance Sergeant. He returned to Australia on board the 'Port Darwin' in 1919.
