Summary

Exterior view of the Federal Coffee Palace, Collins Stree, Melbourne. The largest and tallest building in Melbourne when it was built in 1888 and originally associated with the temperance movement, the establishment was alcohol-free and served as a hotel as well as offering ballrooms and other function and leisure facilities. In 1923 the building became licensed to sell alcohol and was renamed 'The Federal Hotel', and was demolished in 1973.
