Summary

A young boy and a man, thought to be Edgar Kelly and his son Garnet, at a small stone bridge over the Anacotilla River, with fields in the background, in the Second Valley district on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The bridge was built in 1863 and designed by architect Mr. Hargrave. See also B 74678.

One of a collection of lantern slides and glass plate negatives owned by photographer Leonard Frank Potter. See B 74639-B 74745.

Historical information

Robert Kelly and his wife Mary Ann departed their home on the Isle of Man and arrived at Port Adelaide in 1849. They bought land in the Second Valley district on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and set up two farms, 'Cornhill' and 'Anacotilla'. Robert and Mary's son, Edgar Kelly and his wife Fanny Emma Jones, who were married at Encounter Bay in 1882, lived on the farm at Anacotilla Station with their three children, Garnet Francis (1883-1917), Pearl Clemance (1885-1970) and Lorna Gwendolyne (1893-1985). The family cultivated Golden Wattle trees, the bark of which was gathered, milled and exported for use in the tanning of hides. After being educated at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, Garnett Kelly worked with his father to manage Anacotilla Station. In 1916 he enlisted with the AIF, serving as a sapper with the 10th Field Company Australian Engineers, serving in France, and was killed in action on 8 January 1917. Following the death of their son, Edgar and Fanny Kelly sold the property at Anacotilla to Mr C.W. Ness.
