Historical information

Will Cade spent his early days in Adelaide, travelled overseas, and on his return, formed his own orchestra. He then worked at the Regent Theatres in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, at a time when going to 'the pictures' was also a musical experience. In January 1936 the ABC appointed Bill Cade as the founding conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Studio Orchestra, and the Adelaide Wireless Chorus. In addition, he played a significant role in expanding the musical life of 20th-century Adelaide, working with young people, nurturing their musical careers, and was instrumental in setting up a 75-member students orchestra (the first in Australia). His biography 'The flying conductor : a life of music' was written by Avril B. Dalby in 2012.
