Summary

Foy & Gibson's premises, south east corner of Rundle Street and Pulteney Street, Rundle Street frontage is 91 yards and Pulteney Street frontage is 40 yards. Verandah of Foy's was altered in 1938. Compare with B 1814. The four storey building dominates the corner and in 1911 was the Grand Hotel. In 1924, following bankruptcy, it was refurbished as Foy and Gibson's Department Store.

Historical information

Colin Ballantyne was born 12 July 1908 Wayville, South Australia, and died 2 July 1988. A theatre director, actor, playwright, leader, administrator and commercial photographer, he directed around 100 productions covering a wide range of classical and contemporary works between 1931-1971. He also directed the major local drama component of the first five Adelaide Festivals; and founded or helped build companies like the WEA Little Theatre, the Adelaide Theatre Group at the Sheridan Theatre and the Company of Players. Ballantyne was a state and federal president of the Arts Council and the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the State Theatre Company of South Australia from 1972-1978; when he became the Chairman of the Performing Arts Collections of South Australia he guided its development on a daily basis.
