Inside view of the entry to the underground Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy. The photographer comments about the church, "The Serbian Orthodox Church at Coober Pedy is just one of a number of underground churches in the area. The window that appears at ground level on the outside actually soars 20 feet over the church within. With its stained glass windows, dirt walls, and ornately carved statues the church inside has a very eerie silence to it, as I descended into the main worshipping area it felt like I was entering into a funeral vault rather than a church. The church charges $5 per person to support renovations and the ongoing running of the church, and these days, there are more visitors to the church than parishioners. There were hopes that the massive excavation for the church and hall would pay for itself with an opal find, but that hope never materialized. Since the church's priest passed away a few years ago, locals unable to find a replacement have conducted their own services. Priests are flown in for special occasions."
