Summary

'Passing interest was taken in the ruins of the old homestead built by the late John Eyre, somewhere in the early forties, just a few miles down stream from Blanchetown'.[Emu, 1914, Vol. 13, p. 120]. In October 1841 Edward John Eyre went as resident magistrate and Protector of the aborigines to Moorundie on the River Murray.

Historical information

Robert Crompton was the fourth son of Joseph Crompton, the father of twelve children. Early in life he became interested in birds and joined SAOA in 1906. In 1913 he became Secretary of the S.A.O.A. and held this position until 1920. As Robert was a keen photographer and these photographs were in the possession of his nephew John Crompton, it is assumed that he took some of them. However, there are many sizes of photographs so it is likely that others were taken by other members of the party such as Dudley de Souef, H.B. Slaney, John Mellor and Samuel White. Most of the photos have lettering and/or numbering on the back.
