Summary

Two servicemen with two young women. On the back is 'Right - left - George Olive Polly Gus Rapko'. The 'right-left' is assumed to refer to the position of the figures when writing on the back of the photo; however, it is believed the individuals are (from left) Gus Rapko with his sister Polly, and George Fraser with his sister Olive.

Historical information

George Arthur Fraser was born at Inkerman (near Port Wakefield) on 7 June 1892, the third son and sixth child of Donald and Christina (nee Little) Fraser. His occupation at the time of enlistment on 22 July 1916 was 'farmer'; he was assigned as a private in the 5th Reinforcements, 48th Battalion (service number 2414). He was wounded when 'friendly fire' landed near an ammunition dump, and died of his wounds as a German prisoner. He was buried at the French town of Corbehem. Olive Fraser was one of George's younger sisters. Gustav Adolph Rapko was also born at Inkerman on 4 November 1891, the youngest child of Christian and Louisa Henrietta Wilhelmina (nee Schoff) Rapko. Also a farmer, he enlisted on the same day as George Fraser, but confirmation of his enlistment was delayed because of his 'alien origins'. He served in the same section as George (5th Reinforcements, 48th Battalion, service number 2480), and was discharged from the army on 18 February 1919. Polly was his only sister. ['Polly' is a nickname for 'Mary'.]
